Speedwatch Volunteers

Police forces are making more use of police support volunteers. The SpeedWatch group in Fleet is organised by the police and supported by Fleet Town Council are looking for volunteers in this area. Speed Watch teams in surrounding areas are also looking for volunteers in Yateley, Blackwater, Crondall, Odiham and North Warnborough.

SpeedWatch is made up of local volunteers and its role is to remind to drivers of the speed limits. Small teams of volunteers work at the side of the road, recording the details of passing vehicles that are speeding. Each volunteer might take part in 2 one hour sessions each month. Teams use a device that displays in large numbers the speeds of passing vehicles.

When a passing vehicle is traveling above a certain speed, the volunteers record its details and pass them onto the police who will get in touch with the vehicle's Registered Keeper - but it's for education only; no tickets, points, or fines.

Attributes useful for this role -

1. Eye sight - need to be able to read number plates of passing vehicles.

2. Car recognition - To be able to recognise vehicle makes and models is an advantage. There is some flexibility in the data that is recorded and common makes are quickly learned. However not knowing car makes would not be a problem.

3. To be able to stand at the side of the road for about an hour.
